It’s getting down to the wire on the Road to Singapore leader board, and several players are within striking distance of officially qualifying for the BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SC Global.
Qualified: Angelique Kerber, Serena Williams
Next to Qualify: Ranked No.3 on the Road to Singapore leaderboard, Simona Halep could qualify this week by reaching the semifinals. It is possible for Halep to make it official just by by reaching the quarterfinals, but she would need several results falling in her favor. Halep vs. Shvedova is the first match of the day on Wednesday.
American Doubles Team Qualification In Own Hands (Again): Especially given the draw in Wuhan, this is an important week for Atawo/Spears if they are to make a run to the Top 8. They entered the week at No.10 on RTS. In first round they defeated Xu/Zheng (RTS No.9) and today defeated Goerges/Pliskova (RTS No.8). They will face either the Chan Sisters (RTS No.6) or Srebotnik/Klepac (RTS No.13) in the next round. With today’s results, they move into the No.9 spot and now trail Georges/Pliskova (the No.8 ranked team) by 575 points. The Americans will need to win the title to overtake Goerges/Pliskova this week.
Mirza Teamed Up With Strycova: Sania Mirza and Barbora Strycova are the No.3 seed in Wuhan this week. They enter the tournament at No.15 on the Road to Singapore Leaderboard. Their projected highest total as a team would be 4,450 points if they were to win titles in Wuhan, Beijing, an international event the week of October 10th, and Moscow. Needless to say, every match matters for Mirza/Strycova hopes of qualifying for Singapore. Into the quarterfinals, the pair face the winner of Babos/Shvedova vs. Bacsinszky/Kuznetsova.
Qualified: Garcia/Mladenovic, Hingis/Mirza, Makarova/Vesnina
Next to Qualify: It is possible for as many as three of the Current Top 8 teams to qualify this week, depending on results; however, they will need to have at least reach the semifinals with other results falling in their favor.
